Microsoft & Nokia: traction, or desperation?

The recent announcement of Microsoft plans to acquire Nokia's mobile phone business early next year [including mapping tech & patents] comes hot on the heels of Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer's resignation announced last month.

Of course I'd be keen to second guess whether the two events could be related, and whether - as software expertise marries hardware expertise - the partnership represents traction or desperation.

Maybe this is Steve Ballmer's parting manoeuvre, an opportunity for him to depart Microsoft in a less-unfavourable light.

The respective media releases (here and here) don't give too many clues as to whether this is a Ballmer-driven deal.

Whatever the reasoning, is this a healthy deal for Microsoft?
