Ten years on...

I've just remembered that we've just past the 10 year anniversary of the last time I modified my first web site. Coincidentally, I'm embarking on a web technologies roadmap at work. So I thought it could be interesting to take some time to deconstruct my 1998 web site, take a deep breath and be amazed at how the WWW has offered increasing value over time - this blog is all about value after all, eh? Step 1: Open up my site in a new window or tab. Step 2: Read the commentary below. Here are my observations and thoughts. Ed. note: clearly I never finished this piece, but you can probably piece together a few thoughts based on that site from 1999!)

Just sharing a couple of observations around Google... Google Chrome (1.0.154.36) omits image tooltips displaying the "alt text".  Up to now I've enjoyed reading the meticulous image descriptions on BBC News via IE7.  Though not so meticulous in wording, here's an example: As for me I'll not be switching back to IE - the benefits of Chrome still win without a doubt - usability being the largest differential.  I've commented upon Google vs Microsoft at www.innosight.com (broken link as at September 2019!) - read more here   (ditto) . Google, I'm guessing, would argue that W3C's HTML 4 definition of alt text can suffice as an alternative descriptor when an image will not or cannot be displayed. I've noticed Google Search now includes meta-search capabilities - in other words, it can also return a result that is a search engine.  The search engine function returned is still actually utilising Google Search [the syntax being <...
